Cowpens is located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. In 1781, during the Revolutionary War, Colonial troops defeated the British unit known as the British Legion near the present town site, which at that time was simply a cow pasture shared by local farmers. The Battle of Cowpens left the British diminished and demoralized.
