Folly Beach is a six mile long barrier island, and a city in Charleston County, South Carolina, named for the Old English word for a clump of trees or thicket. In the mid 1700s, the island became known as Coffin Land or Coffin Island, as ships entering Charleston Harbor would drop off sick and dying passengers so as to avoid the quarantine restrictions on the mainland, eventually burying the dead in coffins on the island.
