Fripp Island is a gated, resort community situated at the end of a chain of barrier islands in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The 3,000-acre island had several names, but is currently named for Captain Johannes Fripp, a British sailor charged with protecting the Carolina Colony from Spanish attacks. Used chiefly as a private hunting range for most of its history, a bridge was built connecting the island with Hunting Island and U.S. Highway 21 in 1961, after which residential development began.
