Around 1750, a settlement was established on the road between Kingstree, to the south, and Cheraw, to the north. Later, another road was built between Georgetown and Camden, forming a crossroads that was first called McCrea's Crossroads, later Graham's Crossroads. The town that grew there was chartered in 1874 as Graham, which was changed a few years later to Lynches Lake. As there was another post office in South Carolina carrying this name, the town's name was changed in 1883 to Lake City.
