Liberty is located in south-central Pickens County, South Carolina. The area was sparsely populated, and used primarily as a Cherokee hunting land until after the Revolutionary War. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, cotton mills provided employment and supported the development of a municipal infrastructure. The city was once known as Liberty Spring.
