The town of Mount Pleasant, in Charleston County, South Carolina, was settled in 1696 when 51 settlers arrived. It was incorporated in 1837, and in 1860, the town became the first in the state to petition South Carolina to secede from the Union. It became the training ground for the crew of the confederate submarine, J.L. Hunley.
