Chartered in 1880, the South Carolina town of Ellenton was located along the Charleston and Western Carolina Railway in Barnwell County, near the Aiken County line. In 1950, President Truman approved the Savannah River Site for the production of hydrogen bombs, forcing the people of Ellenton and the surrounding area to move. Many of the people of Ellenton moved their homes, chutes and stores fourteen miles north to New Ellenton, which is in Aiken County, South Carolina.
