Port Royal is a town in Beaufort County, in the southern part of South Carolina. In the 1520s, the Spanish established a Fort there and, for the next couple of centuries, the area was fought over and claimed alternately by the Spanish, the Native Americans, French, English, and American colonists. Early in the Civil War, Union forces took all of the sea islands off the coast of South Carolina, establishing schools there for freed slaves. Since 2000, the town has expanded greatly by annexation.
