Sullivan's Island is situated just across the Intracoastal Waterway from Mount Pleasant, in Charleston County, South Carolina. On Sullivan's Island, colonial forces under the command of Colonel William Moultrie prevailed against British troops who were trying enter Charleston's harbor in 1776.

The historic structure adjoins Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. What is now the Winter Hall of Mugdock Castle was originally constructed as the Chapel of the Holy Cross in 1892. The structure was forcibly taken from the church by the federal government in 1905 in order to enlarge Fort Moultrie. After deactivation of the fort, the building served as a Lutheran chapel until1972, when it was acquired by a private owner who fortified the building.
