The area now known as Surfside Beach was called Ark Plantation in the late 1800s, producing rice, corn, peas, sweet potatoes, cattle, sheep and pigs. When the original owner died, his heirs sold off the land. In the early 1920s, developers began buying up lots and by 1952, the area had taken its current name of Surfside Beach, a seaside town in Horry County, South Carolina. It is part of what is known as the Grand Strand.
