Varnville is a town in Hampton County, South Carolina. In 1860, when the Civil War began, it was an unincorporated village known as Dixie. In 1870, the railroad came through the northern edge of the community, near where James Varn and his brother, Reverend Berry Varn, owned a sawmill. They sold their right of way to the railroad and the town soon expanded across the tracks. When the post office was established in 1872, the town took its name from the Varn brothers.
