Prior to the Revolutionary War, Richard Winn moved from Virginia to what is now known as Fairfield County. His property covered the current site of Winnsboro, and was then known as Wynnsborough. The village was laid out and chartered in 1785. Winnsboro is the seat of Fairfield County, South Carolina.
