Located in the southwestern part of Spartanburg County, the South Carolina town was populated after the Revolutionary War when men returning from the war moved their families south from western North Carolina. The town is named for Joseph Woodruff, who owned a land grant of two hundred acres in the area, although the town was not chartered until 1874.
