York is the seat of York County, South Carolina. The community was settled in the 1700s by pioneers from York County, Pennsylvania, who traced their city's founders to areas in England under the House of York, for which the white rose was its emblem. Hence, the town is known as the White Rose City. The settlement was originally known as Fergus Crossroads. When it was named the county seat, its name was changed to Yorkville, which was shortened to York near the turn of the 20th century.
