Aberdeen, the county seat of Brown County, South Dakota, was established as a town in 1879. First laid out as a town site by the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad, it was named for the Scottish hometown of a railroad bigwig. It was designated the county seat after the original seat, Columbia, had land prices so high that the railroad changed its route to exclude them and include Aberdeen.
