The South Dakota city of Brookings is the county seat of Brookings County. The city was named for Wilmot Wood Brookings, one of the first settlers in the Dakota Territory. He oversaw construction of a road running through the city on behalf of the Western Town Company. Such an adverturer was he that on an expedition to locate a town in January of 1858, he was stuck in a blizzard and had to have both of his feet amputated. He was later elected the Squatter Governor.
