Canistota is a city in McCook County, South Dakota, located about thirty miles west of Sioux Falls and forty miles east of Mitchell, along Interstate 90. Canistota was established in 1883 when the site was chosen as a station for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, and named for Canastota, New York, the spelling difference the result of a clerical error.
