Named for Belgian Father Pierre De Smet, a 19th century Jesuit missionary, the City of De Smet is the seat of Kingsbury County, South Dakota. De Smet was the childhood home of author Laura Ingalls Wilder and the birthplace of author Rose Wilder Lane. The city was founded in 1880 and incorporated in 1883.
