Highmore is the seat of Hyde County, South Dakota. The town had its origins as twin towns, both platted in 1882. E.O. Parker purchased forty acres which he platted in June of 1882, with Iowa Avenue as its main street. In July of the same year, A.E. Van Camp platted forty acres of his own, using Commercial Avenue as his main street. Soon businesses built up on what is now Second Street, connecting the twin towns. The city still has two main streets connected by Second Street.
