The seat of Fall River County, Hot Springs, South Dakota also serves as the neighboring Shannon County's administrative center. First called Minnekahta, the city was renamed in 1882 after numerous health resorts were erected around the springs.

Situated south of Hot Springs, South Dakota, the sanctuary features hundreds of wild mustangs and their foals roaming free across the prairies, as well mustang foals offered for sale.
