The "Gateway to the Badlands", Kadoka, South Dakota is the county seat of Jackson County. It was originally called Willard but was renamed Kadoka, a phonetic spelling of Hodoka which means "hole in the wall" due to its location at the mouth of a gap which leads into the Badlands. Town lots went on sale in 1907, just after the train depot was built. The town was incorporated in 1908.
