Lead is a city in Lawrence County, situated in the western South Dakota Black Hills, near its border with Wyoming. The site of the Homestake Mine, the largest, deepest and most productive gold mine in the Western Hemisphere before its closing in 2002, Lead was officially founded as a company town in 1876, and incorporated as a city in 1890. In 1974, most of the city was added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Lead Historic District.
