Incorporated in 1903, Mount Vernon is a city in Davidson County, South Dakota. Originally named Arlandton after a man who provided shelter for travelers, it became Mount Vernon sometime around 1881, when the post office requested a change in the name, as its original name was too similar to the already organized Arlington.
