Located in Hutchinson County, South Dakota, Parkston as incorporated in 1886, and named for R.S. Parke, an early landowner. Prior to 1880, very few people were in the area, other than a sod shanty inhabited by a man named Peter Swartz. In 1881, the town of Dakota City began to spring up nearby in anticipation of the railroad expansion into the area. When the railroad bypassed the small city, its inhabitants were largely responsible for establishing the new town of Parkston.
