Pierre, the capital city of South Dakota and the county seat of Hughes County was founded in 1880 on the Missouri River opposite Fort Pierre, in the exact center of the state. It is named for the fort across the river, which itself is named in honor of Pierre Chouteau, Jr. who was a French-Canadian fur trader in the area.
