Incorporated in 1907, Platte is a city in Charles Mix County, South Dakota. Settlement in the region began sometime in the early 1880s, and the town was named for Platte Creek, which itself was named for a fur trader who lived in the area at that time, whose name was Bernard Pratte, Platte Creek being a mistranscription of his surname.
