Best known today as the location of one of the largest annual motorcycle events in the world, Sturgis is a city in Meade County, South Dakota, and is the seat of that county. Founded in 1878 as a boom town catering to off-duty soldiers from the U.S. Cavalry's Fort Meade, the city is named for Fort Meade's commander, Colonel Samuel D. Sturgis.
