As with many other towns in South Dakota, Tyndall came into being when the railroad came through the area around 1879, and was named for John Tyndall, a British scientist who had toured the United States in 1872. The county seat of Bon Homme County moved from Bon Homme to Tyndall in 1885 when Tyndall citizens contributed money to construct a new courthouse.
