Wagner is a city in Charles Mix County, South Dakota. The city began as a railroad town, incorporated in 1901 and comprised mostly of immigrants from Norway, Sweden and Czechoslovakia. The original town was located three and a half miles south of its current site, and was known as Tar Paper Town, later renamed for Walter W. Wagner, its first appointed postmaster.
