The city of Yankton began as a river town, with life revolving around the Missouri River. With the coming of the Dakota Southern Railway in 1873, river traffic gave way to rail traffic, even more so after the Great Flood of 1881, which sunk some boats and damaged others beyond repair. Yankton is the seat of Yankton County, South Dakota, and was the original capital of Dakota Territory.
