Clarksville, the county seat of Montgomery County, Tennessee, was named in honor of Revolutionary War hero General George Rogers Clark. After the Revolution, the city, which was at that time in North Carolina, was partially settled by veterans who served under General George Washington in the then-disbanded Continental Army. When Tennessee was founded in 1796, Clarksville became part of that state.
