Johnson City is situated in three Tennessean counties, Carter, Sullivan and Washington. It was founded in 1856 by Henry Johnson who started a railroad station. Originally known as Johnson's Depot, it was called Haynesville, after Landon Carter Haynes, who was a Confederate senator during the War Between the States, but once the war was over, it was renamed to Johnson City. It was incorporated in 1869.
