Situated in the southwest part of Tennessee on a bluff above the Mississippi River, Memphis is the county seat of Shelby. The city was founded in 1819 by three men, including Andrew Jackson, who named it after the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, which was located on the Nile River. Memphis was the site of the 19608 sanitation workers' strike which drew Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the city, where he was assassinated on his motel balcony.
