Newport, Tennessee is the seat of Cocke County. The city was along the Great Indian Warpath. It was founded when a ferry was established by settler Peter Fine in what was called New Port. It was officially incorporated as New Port in 1812. The town tried to stay neutral during the Civil War but was constantly raided by soldiers of both the Union and the Confederacy. The name was changed officially to Newport in 1884.
