Situated in Cameron County, within the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, Harlingen was first known as Six Shooter Junction. It grew in population and gained its current name from Lon C. Hill, who envisioned the Arroyo Colorado as a commercial waterway, and founded the town, naming it after the city by that name in the Netherlands.
