Located near the southern tip of Texas, in the area known as the Rio Grande Valley, McAllen is the most populated city in Hidalgo County, Texas. Settlement of the area began in the early 1850s, when John McAllen arrived. He and others established a town site in 1904, then known as West McAllen. The railroad reached the area a year later, and other developers started a separate town on another nearby piece of land, naming it East McAllen. Soon afterward, the two towns merged to form McAllen.
