Port Aransas is located on Mustang Island, across Aransas Bay from the city of Aransas Pass, and within Nueces County, Texas. Prior to the coming of the Europeans, the island was inhabited by the Karankawa Indians, who lived along the Gulf Coast from Galveston Bay to Corpus Christi. Its history also includes pirates, including Captain Jean Lafitte. Currently, the island is a popular spot for tourists.
