Red Oak is a small, but growing city in the north-central part of Ellis County, Texas. First settled in 1844, the town was first called Possum Trot because there were so many possums in the area. It was renamed Red Oak, in honor of the creek of the same name, in 1849, and it was incorporated in 1949.
