Originally, the city was not named Round Rock, nor was it located where it is currently. The settlement of Brushy, as it was known then, was situated along Brushy Creek. In 1851, a post office was established in that name but, in 1854, the postal authorities asked the town to provide another name for the settlement, and they decided on Round Rock. The coming of the railroad in 1876 prompted the relocation of the town's commercial district, leaving the original settlement to be known as Old Town.
