The county seat of Grayson County is the city of Sherman, named in honor of General Sidney Sherman, who was a key leader in the Texas Revolution as well as the new Republic of Texas after the war. It was founded ten years after the revolution, in 1846, and was the center of old west violence for some time. In 1862, the publisher of the Whig newspaper, The Patriot, was murdered, and later, Jesse James and Bill Quantril were regular visitors to the area.
