The county seat of Sutton County, Texas, is the city of Sonora. Around 1885, a rancher and merchant named Charles G. Adams, settled on the land that later became the city. He named it in honor of a family servant from Sonora, Mexico. The post office was established in 1889, and in 1890, he offered free lots.
