Located in Davis County, Utah, the city of Layton is named in honor of Christopher Layton, a Mormon leader who colonized a few places. It was settled in the mid-19th century as spillover from Kaysville. It became the subject of a Supreme Court case when the residents of Layton began to object to the fact that they paid taxes to that town but got no services in return. The case was decided in favor of Layton, and a separatist movement succeeded in 1902, rendering Layton an independent area.
