The only New England state which is landlocked is the Green Mountain State of Vermont. Originally a French possession, the British ended up with it after the French and Indian War. During the Revolutionary War, the Vermont Republic was founded, and it was not until 14 years later, in 1791, when it became the fourteenth state. The capital is Montpelier, and the largest city is Burlington.
