Blacksburg, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, sits in Montgomery County. Originally settled in 1671, the settlement was attacked in what would be known in history s the Draper's Meadow Massacre during the French and Indian War. By the time the war was over, the settlement was deserted. In 1798, a town wsas established on the Draper site, and it was named Blacksburgh, which was the name given when the Post Office erected an office in 1827. The "h" was officially dropped in 1893.
