Culpeper, Virginia is the seat of Culpeper County. It was established in 1759 as the Town of Fairfax. In 1795, the town got a post office and the name was officially changed to Culpeper, though most maps still called it Fairfax. There continued to be confusion about the town's name until 1869 when the Virginia Assembly formally renamed the town to Culpeper.
