The independent city of Hopewell, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, was established in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale. Located on a site overlooking the Appomattox and James Rivers, it was first called Bermuda City. Other names which were given to the city were Charles City, Charles City Point, and City Point. It was finally named Hopewell in honor of the ship which carried some of the landowners to America.
