The independent city of Petersburg, Virginia is situated at the fall line of the Appomattox River, making it a popular port from the beginning of its existence, and in the 1830s, when the railroads became the emerging transportation technology, it became a transfer point for most railroad companies. During the Civil War, Petersburg was the scene of the nine-month-long Siege of Petersburg.
