Founded in 1732, Stephens City, Virginia, in Frederick County, was settled by German immigrants. It was chartered in 1758 as Stephensburgh. During the Revolutionary War, it was called "New Town" or "Newtown." Most townsmen joined the Confederate Army, but the town was controlled by the Union Army, a situation which caused repeated ambushes on the wagon road outside of town. In 1880, the post office renamed the town Pantops, but the town folk fought it and the name became Stephens City.
