The independent city of Suffolk, Virginia, is part of Hampton Roads. It was founded in 1742, a port town on the Nansemond River, and was called Constant's Warehouse in honor of a settler and his business. It was renamed in honor of the hometown of Royal Governor William Gooch, Suffolk, England. It was incorporated as a town in 1808 and as an independent city in 1906. It was merged with the City of Nansemond in 1974, making it the largest independent city in the Commonwealth, area-wise.
