The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer is an international Roman Catholic congregation whose focus is on missionary work. Founded in 1748 by Saint Alphonsus Liguori it Italy, the congregation initially labored among the poor and neglected people around Naples. Known as Redemptorists, members of the congregation are Catholic priests and consecrated brothers who are especially dedicated to Our Mother of Perpetual Help, to which they were appointed by Pope Pius IX in 1865 as custodians and missionaries of the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, enshrined at the Redemptorist Church of Saint Alphonsus Liguori in Rome. After its founding in 1748 and 1749, the congregation quickly opened houses in Sicily and southern Italy, then moved beyond the borders of what it now Italy. Redemptorists charge themselves with putting into action the commands of Jesus Christ to love one another, and are largely a missionary society. Liguori viewed the members of the congregation as itinerant preachers of the Gospel and they are known for conducting parish missions, preaching in a style that is down to earth and understandable to those who are listening. The Redemptorists also administer shrines that serve as places of pilgrimage, as well as retreat houses that are open to people of all walks of life, Catholic or otherwise. The Redemptorists continue as caretakers of the Byzantine icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, and propagate devotion to Mary under this title. Like other religious congregations, the Redemptorists also minister in parishes, education, youth, and social work and, in recent, years they have become involved in social justice issues. Those seeking to become members of the congregation initially go through a period of contact and discernment, then become a postulant, then a novitiate, at which time they receive the religious habit. A simple profession is made at the end of the novitiate then, after a period of study, perpetual profession (final vows) is made.
